12‑Hour Coronal Polishing Certification Course

Overview:
The California 12‑Hour Coronal Polishing Certification Course provides participants with the required curriculum to obtain Board‑approved certification in coronal polishing in the state of California. Our Board‑approved course #: CP150 includes didactic self‑study, laboratory instruction, and clinical application, ensuring that each participant demonstrates minimum competency and the safe performance of coronal polishing procedures on live patients. Certification through a Board‑approved provider is required for dental assistants who perform coronal polishing on patients in any dental setting. All course requirements—including lecture, lab, pre‑clinical, and clinical instruction—are delivered in full compliance with California Dental Board regulations, and must be completed to achieve certification.
Admissions Requirements:
- All participants must provide evidence of the following:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must provide a copy of current CPR/BLS certification (AHA or ARC)
- 8‑Hour Infection Control Certification
- Student must have basic knowledge of the dentition (jaws, teeth, universal numbering system)
- Students must wear scrubs and closed‑toe footwear
Patient Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years or older
(Patients under 18 may participate only with parent/guardian consent and required documentation.)
- Must be in good medical and oral health
(A medical history form will be completed prior to treatment.)
Course Structure:
Participants will complete the didactic instruction and written examination online prior to attending the on‑campus laboratory and clinical components. An email invitation will be sent to access the self‑study module (4 hours). Participants may not attend pre‑clinical or clinical sessions unless the online self‑study and written final exam are completed. Preclinical & Clinical Components.
Training includes:
- Coronal polishing theory and safety
- Indications and contraindications
- Selective polishing techniques
- Use of prophy angles, pastes, and polishing agents
- Clinical evaluation of plaque, stain, and polishing outcomes
Instruction is delivered through self‑study, instructional videos, small‑group training, manikin practice, and live‑patient clinical experiences. The California Dental Board will be notified upon successful completion of the course.
Clinical Patient Requirements:
Each student must provide four clinical patients:
- Three patients for full coronal polishing procedures completed in the dental office
(The supervising dentist must sign and validate each procedure.) - One patient for the final clinical exam performed in class
Students must wear scrubs, have hair secured above the collar, and wear closed‑toe shoes.
Laboratory Requirements:
- Students will complete two full coronal polishing procedures on manikins during the lab session Course Materials
Course tuition includes use of materials, equipment, and PPE during pre‑clinical and clinical sessions. Recommended PPE includes:
- One disposable isolation gown or knee‑length disposable lab jacket
(Long‑sleeved, cuffed, snap‑front or tie‑back; reusable gowns are not permitted.) - Six pairs of medical examination gloves
- Four disposable face masks (cone or earloop)
Students must complete the self‑study portion before attending lab and clinical sessions.

Oceanpointe Dental Assistant Academy is a great school to become a dental assistant. You learn everything fast and efficient in 10 weeks. The online modules are a little time consuming but if you are consistent with them you will be fine.
