Overview
The California Radiation Safety Certification course provides the participant with the required curriculum to obtain certification in California. Our Board-approved course #:X1035 ensures, Didactic self-study, Lab, and Clinical instruction, that each participant demonstrates minimum competency and the safe application of the principles and techniques of radiography prior to human subject exposures. Certification through a Board-approved provider is required to expose radiographs of any type, using any dental radiographic equipment, in any dental-related setting.
All course requirements for lecture, lab, pre/clinical and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human subject radiographs are consistent with BOARD REGULATIONS and must be completed in order to achieve certification.
Admissions Requirements
All participants must provide certificate evidence of the following courses:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must not be pregnant
- Must provide a copy of current CPR BLS certification (AHA or ARC)
- 8-Hour Infection Control Certification
Must be a graduate of the OceanPointe Dental Assisting Academy program or currently employed in a dental office, or a Dental Assistant – please call before you register for this course if you do not work in an office or have access to an office.
Student must have knowledge of the dentition. (jaws, teeth, universal numbering system)
Students are asked to wear scrubs and not wear open-toed footwear.
PATIENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years or older.
- Patient may be under the age of 18 provided a parent or guardian provides consent and documents consistent with the course.
- Patient must be in good medical and oral health (a medical history form will be completed prior to treatment).
- Must not be pregnant.
- Must have no more than 6 missing teeth and at least 26 of their natural dentition present.
The course participant will be completing the didactic instruction and examination portion of the course online prior to completing the laboratory at our campus and clinical requirements of the course on our extramural facility. Course participants will receive an email invite to participate in 8-hours of course via self-study. Participants will not be able to attend the pre-clinical and clinical components of the course if the self-study, online and written final exam are not completed.
pre-clinical and clinical application of x-ray safety, bisecting and parallel techniques of digital and film x-rays, and evaluation of digital and film dental x-rays. For this course, we will be using self-study methods, instructional videos, and small group training using dental x-ray manikins and live patients. The California Dental Board will be notified upon successful completion of the Radiation Safety Certification course.
Each student will provide 4 clinical patients and produce one FMX on each clinical patient with the fourth patient being the clinical final. Three clinical patients will be treated for full-mouth x-rays (an FMX is 18 images per patient and includes 4 BW’s) by the student. We will be using digital images. The student’s supervising dentist must sign and validate that each of the three FMX’s was completed by the student. The 4th patient will be treated for an FMX in class as the final clinical exam.
Student must wear scrubs, wear hair pulled back above collar, and not wear open-ended footwear.
If you are not a current dental assistant working at an office, the 4 live patient FMX validation will be conducted by the supervising Dentist Dr. Anthony W. Deza, DDS.
In the Laboratory class, student will complete 2 FMX’s on manikins.
Student will bring four patients to the clinical with one patient being the final exam FMX.
Course Materials
Course tuition includes materials and training equipment usage, and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for use during the pre-clinical and clinical sections of the course. The recommended PPE is as follows:
- One (1) disposable isolation gown or knee-length disposable lab jacket-long sleeved, cuffed, snap front or tie back (no reusable, washable jackets or gowns)
- Six (6) pair medical examination gloves in appropriate size
- Four (4) disposable face masks (cone or earloop)
Students must complete the self-study portion prior to the lab and clinical studies

REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY:
There are NO refunds for cancelled or missed events, workshops, tutoring sessions or courses - no exceptions.
Requests to reschedule an upcoming date must be submitted no less than 15 days prior to the original event start date; any request received 15 days or less prior to the event will be denied - no exceptions.
Upon approval, the registrant must select a new course date within a six (6) month time frame of the original course date.
Only one course/registration reschedule will be allowed.

Oceanpointe Dental Assistant Academy is a great school to become a dental assistant. You learn everything fast and efficient in 10 weeks. The online modules are a little time consuming but if you are consistent with them you will be fine.
